Evergreen Academy has chosen to accept the challenge of becoming a certified Green School. This year our project will be to establish a school garden that will integrate into classroom science and social studies lessons. The process is extensive and includes the following:
Establishing a Green Team
Assess an environmental category to challenge (School Garden)
Take action by implementing lasting change
Verify your impact
Share our story
Celebrate our certification
Our garden now has rain barrels, a bird bath, bird houses and feeders, a butterfly house, a chicken coop, a composter, a worm bin, raised beds, a green house, and an outdoor classroom.
Certified Wildlife Habitat
The Evergreen Academy grounds are a Certified Wildlife Habitat! With conscientious planning, landscaping and sustainable gardening, the National Wildlife Federation recognizes the establishment and maintenance of our official wildlife habitat. This property provides the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to raise young.
Ethnobotanical Garden
The 4th grade class has established and Ethnobotanical Garden on Evergreen’s campus. Ethnobotany is the study of plant lore. Many indigenous people used and still use various native plants for medicine, dye, food, and raw materials for canoes, clothing, houses, tools, and ceremonial artwork. The Evergreen Ethnobotanical was established in 2015 with a display of native plant species the students have identified and researched. They include the following:
Salal
Red Elderberry
Red Twig Dogwood
Oregon Grape
Irish Moss
Scotch Moss
Wild Mock Orange
Sword Fern
Common Snowberry
Evergreen Huckleberry<
Wild Ginger
